Good Lord and Butter!

One last shoutout to my friends at The Texas Rep Theatre.  It’s closing weekend for “The Miss Firecracker Contest.”

You know I like to showcase smaller theatre companies in town, since the big venues get all the attention.  Bigger isn’t always better.  Miss Firecracker is a winner!  It’s a clever, funny, and dramatic story about small-town life in the South.  You might have seen the movie starring Holly Hunter and Mary Steenburgen back in 1990.  It’s about a young woman, Carnelle Scott, who wants nothing more than to win the local July 4th beauty pageant.  She’s hoping for support from the two people she looks up to most, older cousins Elaine and Delmont.  But when the pair returns home, all “H” breaks loose as the family is forced to resolve some deeply-rooted differences and resentment.  Does Carnell make it?  Does she win?  And why is her seamstress named Popeye?!

Miss Firecracker is an original story by Pulitzer prize-winning writer Beth Henley, starring a fantastic cast of local actors who are as talented as anyone you’ll see.  The show closes this weekend (5/22-5/24), so you’ve got a few opportunities…
