FLASHBACK: “Coming To America”

"I want a woman who will arouse my intellect as well as my loins."

It’s only Eddie Murphy’s best movie ever.  That was when he could play multiple characters and they were actually different.  The movie kick-started a couple careers too.  Just think, if it weren’t for that barbershop scene, casting directors may have never noticed Cuba Gooding, Jr.’s face.  Sure, the TV show ER made Eric LaSalle famous, but Coming to America made him and his jerry curl memorable.

Coming to America had humor, action, suspense, drama, and love.  Okay, that’s overdoing it.  But there were epic battles.  Two princes fighting over the love a beautiful young maiden:  Prince Akeem of Zamunda versus Prince Darryl of Soul Glo.  The dueling kings:  Jaffe (James Earl Jones), leader of Zamunda and Cleo (John Amos), leader of McDowell’s fast food.  And it was probably Arsenio Hall’s best moment in showbiz.

Anyway, it was on TV this weekend and I couldn’t turn away.  So I did some youtubing (sp?) and found, along with some of those classic moments, the original movie trailer, and Akeem’s prediction of the Giants beating the Packers with a last-second field goal coming true.
